On Disney XD’s Pair of Kings, teenager Boomer, played by actor Doc Shaw, faces many often-hilarious challenges as one of the heirs to the throne of the island of Kinkow. Shaw, 20, is taking on some challenges of his own off-screen. Recently, he took part in Disney XD’s “TRYathlon” event, a TV special that is a part of Disney XD’s “TRYit” and Disney’s Magic of Healthy Living programs. The event aims to inspire kids to try something new, get active and challenge themselves.

Team "Kickin' It," Team "Lab Rats" and Team "Pair of Kings" prepare to compete in fun challenges for Disney XD's TRYathlon.

For the TRYathlon, Shaw teamed up with his Pair of Kings co-star, Adam Hicks, and a young fan from Georgia, Saint Clair Duberry. They were led by their coach Kevin Love, an NBA star for the Minnesota Timberwolves. The group competed against teams from Disney XD’s Kickin’ It and Lab Rats in fun challenges that tested their skills and teamwork. A TV special on the event, hosted by Lab Rats stars Hal Sparks and Tyrel Jackson Williams, will air Monday, August 13, at 8 p.m. Eastern Time/Pacific Time, on Disney XD.

Earlier this month, Shaw took a break from filming Pair of Kings to chat with TFK about his experience at the TRYathlon, his own health challenges and what’s coming up on the show.

TFK:

You participated in the first-ever Disney XD TRYathlon. How was the experience for you?

SHAW:

It was a very different experience. We were all excited to be a part of the process and to be a part of this new event. I had a good time.

TFK:

You worked with NBA star Kevin Love as your coach. What advice did he give you and your teammates?

SHAW:

Kevin was actually a really cool dude. I’m a big NBA fan, and so it was great to meet him. He told us to pace ourselves, make sure we all focus as a team and make sure it’s a team effort so we can go out there and compete, and just try to do our best.

TFK:

How were Adam Hicks and Saint Clair Duberry as teammates?

SHAW:

They were really great. We all put in a good team effort and gave 100%. We tried our best to accomplish our goal, and that was to win, so hopefully the fans can see us trying.

TFK:

What part of the challenge was the most fun for you?

SHAW:

I think biking across the water, when Saint and I were in big pedal bikes, was really fun. I had never (done that before) for a competition.

TFK:

The TRYathlon is part of Disney's Magic of Healthy Living program. You have some history with high blood pressure. Can you talk a bit about that and the healthy living changes you've made?

SHAW:

Off an on, I would have high blood pressure. [A friend and I] just started working out for the summer, and I continued doing that after he left California. That’s kind of what I’ve been doing in my personal time. I’m training, so that’s been fun for me.

TFK:

What positive effects have come out of your efforts?

SHAW:

A lot of positives have come out of it. It’s forced me to go outside a little bit more, so I’m not inside watching TV as often. I do a lot of activities, like swimming and playing basketball, football and baseball. So it’s really just got me a lot more active, and of course, it’s got me a lot healthier and in better shape as well.

TFK:

Do you have any advice for kids who are looking to make some healthy living changes?

SHAW:

You just have to start, and the easiest way is the way I did it. Find a friend or close relative who wants to join in on the training process, so you can team up and do it together. If you continue to do it and make progress as a team, that’s great. Or if one of you just continues to do it on your own, that’s good as well. All you have to do is put a little effort into it, and you’ll have results.

TFK:

The Olympic Games are under way, and your TRYathlon coach Kevin Love is competing in basketball on Team U.S.A. Do you have a favorite Olympic event to watch?

SHAW:

I’m always looking out for Team U.S.A. basketball. Big fan. I was a little devastated when they almost got beat by Lithuania (on August 4), but it’s all good, we pulled (ahead). I’m always looking at Michael Phelps, Gabby Douglas, Usain Bolt and all the other great competitors, so I’m really enjoying the Olympics this year.

TFK:

Have you had a favorite Olympic moment?

SHAW:

My favorite moment would be Michael Phelps becoming the most decorated Olympian of all time. That probably won’t happen (again) for a long time, so I’m glad I got to witness that.

TFK:

Your TRYathlon teammate, Adam Hicks, is a new addition to the third season of Pair of Kings, playing Boomer’s long-lost brother, Boz. Have you been showing Adam the ropes around the set?

SHAW:

I’ve been showing him different things, how we go about our days here. He caught on very quickly and is showing me things now. It’s been a fun season for us. And it all pulled together very well, so we are all happy that he’s here and happy that he was able to be a part of this show.

TFK:

How is Boomer adjusting to learning about his new brother?

SHAW:

Boomer has some struggles at first, but eventually he copes with the whole idea. He and Boz are best friends, as well as brothers, and they’re always in adventures together. Hopefully, the fans will continue to watch and get to see the adventures that we go on.

TFK:

What else is coming up for Boomer this season?

SHAW:

A lot of fighting, karate techniques and swinging. So just the normal Kinkow adventures that we have here. We’re actually filming a fight scene (on set) today for a two-part episode that we have coming up, so there are a lot of great things to look forward to from Boomer and from the rest of the cast.

TFK:

You’re also in a new movie Thunderstruck, in theaters August 24, starring NBA star Kevin Durant. You’re a big basketball fan, so how was that experience for you?

SHAW:

It was one of the greatest experiences ever, honestly, getting to work with Kevin Durant and meet different NBA players and WNBA players as well. It was definitely a treat, so I was happy that I got to be a part of that project and so thankful that I had that experience.

TFK:

Why should viewers tune in to the TRYathlon special? What should they expect to see?

SHAW:

They should tune in to see us giving great effort. (Shaw laughs.) We are definitely not competing to be in the Olympics, but we are just getting out there and having a good time and showing all the viewers that getting outside, having a good time with your friends and getting active is our whole goal here. Hopefully, we can accomplish that and people can watch and want to go outside and get active, just like we did. So definitely tune in to see us.
