A crowd of 2,500 supporters of Mitt Romney, the likely Republican presidential nominee, gathered for a campaign event near the battleship USS Wisconsin, in Norfolk, Virginia, on August 11. The crowd chanted Romney’s name as he took the stage. It was a special stop for the campaign. Romney was there to introduce his vice presidential running mate, Wisconsin congressman Paul Ryan. As Ryan was introduced, the crowd broke into cheers. “(Ryan’s) leadership begins with character and values,” Romney said. “He is a person of great steadiness, whose integrity is unquestioned and whose word is good.”

Ryan addressed the crowd after Romney’s introduction. “For the last 14 years, I have proudly represented Wisconsin in Congress. There, I have focused on solving the problems that confront our country.” Ryan said. “I am committed, in heart and mind, to putting that experience to work in a Romney administration.”

Mitt Romney is the expected Republican nominee for president for the 2012 election. The party is expected to officially announce the Romney/Ryan candidacy at the Republican National Convention, in Tampa, Florida, later this month.

Who is Paul Ryan?

Ryan grew up in the small town of Janesville, Wisconsin. He has spent most of his professional career working for Congress. Ryan was elected as a Wisconsin representative to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1998. He is now in his seventh term. He also serves as chair of the House Budget Committee. Ryan is married to Janna Ryan. They live in Janesville with their daughter, Liza, and two sons, Charlie and Sam.

Ryan made a name for himself in Congress for his conservative policy views. As chairperson of the House budget committee, Ryan has played an important role in shaping Republican policy on how to balance the federal budget and overhaul social programs.

The Race Ahead

President Barack Obama is running for a second term in office against Romney. Obama is expected to accept the official Democratic nomination, with Vice President Joe Biden as his running mate, at the Democratic National Convention, in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Obama welcomed Representative Ryan to the race during a fundraiser in Chicago, Illinois, on August 12. “He is a decent man, he is a family man, he is an articulate spokesman for Governor Romney’s vision, but it is a vision that I fundamentally disagree with,” Obama said.

Americans will make their choice for President at the polls on November 6.
