Likely Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney arrives in Tampa, Florida, on August 28, 2012, with his wife Ann and grandson Joe, for the Republican National Convention. Ann Romney will be one of the convention speakers on August 28.

After a one-day weather delay, the Republican National Convention (RNC) is getting under way today, August 28, in Tampa, Florida. Likely Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his running mate Paul Ryan arrived in the city today, two days before they are expected to officially accept their party’s nomination. Nearly 50,000 visitors are anticipated to visit the Tampa Bay area for the RNC, which is taking place at the Tampa Bay Times Forum venue.

Romney’s wife, Ann Romney, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie—a rising star in the Republican Party—will give the first major speeches of the convention tonight. They will explain to convention attendees and television viewers why voters should choose Mitt Romney for President on Election Day.

The convention is hosting 4,411 Republican delegates and alternate delegates from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and five territories. Delegates represent the voters who took part in primaries and caucuses earlier this year. The delegates will cast votes for their party’s presidential and vice presidential nominees.

Eye on Isaac

The RNC was originally schedule to begin on Monday, but when severe weather threatened to hit the Tampa Bay area, plans were changed. Officials rescheduled most of Monday’s events to Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday.

Tropical Storm Isaac passed through the Tampa Bay area without any major problems. But as of Tuesday afternoon, Isaac had become a hurricane and was headed for Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle area. The storm is expected to make landfall exactly seven years after Hurricane Katrina devastated many of the same areas.
