Right after I finished my first day of fifth grade, in Arlington, Virginia, my family and I headed out to the airport. We were going to Charlotte, North Carolina, for the Democratic National Convention (DNC). We got a quick bite to eat, then we boarded the plane, excited for the events ahead. I took out my homework and started it, then waited for the plane to take off.

After all the passengers had boarded, and we had waited to make our way to the runway to fly, the flight attendant announced that there was bad weather in Charlotte. She said it looked like the storm was heading to Washington, D.C., where we were and we would not be able to take off. The flight attendant said she did not know how long the delay would last. I was sad, because if the flight were cancelled, then we would have to wait until morning to travel.

I sat in my seat and finished my homework. I picked up my book and started to read. I was halfway done with it when we started down the runway, gathering speed. I cheered happily! We were going to Charlotte at last! I could not wait to get there and have fun, but my parents said that we would probably not do anything except get our credentials since it was so late. Credentials allow journalists and others to get into the convention.

After we landed in Charlotte, we went to our hotel and checked in. It was really late, but we went back out to the Time Warner Cable Arena. The place was packed! Michelle Obama’s brother, Craig Robinson, and President Obama’s sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, had just finished speaking to the crowd. We stayed for just a little while. It was already so late, so we decided to go back to the hotel and come back early the next morning. In bed, we watched Michelle Obama's speech on T.V. We fell asleep quickly after the speech. We had a big day ahead.
