TFK reports from the orange carpet of the 2013 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards
This past Saturday, the biggest Hollywood stars came out for a little slime time! Nickelodeon rolled out the orange carpet for the 2013 Kids’ Choice Awards (KCAs) in Los Angeles, California. What makes this award show different? Kids pick the winners by voting for their favorite stars online. Winners receive orange blimps and, sometimes, a splattering of green slime.
"I love that everyone's talking about the slime,” Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas told TFK. “Do you want to get slimed? Who do you want to get slimed?"
Gabby attended the awards to present the Favorite Male Athlete Award to Miami Heat star LeBron James. The gold medal-winning gymnast was spared the green slime. James escaped goop-free too since he accepted the award by video.
Want to know who else won big and who got slimed? Ever wonder what the nominees think of this crazy award show? TFK Kid Reporter Amelia Compton got the scoop straight from the stars on the orange carpet.
On the Orange Carpet
A sea of excited fans packed the orange carpet, trying to get a glimpse of their favorite stars. Two huge boxes sat next to the grandstands with signs on them marked Do Not Touch. So what did many of the stars do as they walked by? They hit the buttons, of course! Sometimes, colorful streamers soared into the air. Other times, it was blasts of loud steam.
The stars took their time heading down the carpet, shaking hands, giving hugs and signing autographs. Alyson Stoner, who voices Isabella on Disney's Phineas and Ferb, said it makes sense that kids choose the award winners because they know the performers better than anyone.
"They get to vote in something that's actually important, the KCAs," added Vincent Martella, who voices Phineas. "I mean, back in November they were like, ‘Ah, we don't get to vote for president? Whatever.’ And now they're like, ‘Mom and Dad, you can't vote for what really matters: Phineas and Ferb!’"
And the Orange Blimp Goes to…
Inside the arena, slime was flying and people were screaming. Singers Pitbull and Christina Aguilera opened the awards and were soon covered in goop. They weren't the only ones. When L.A. Laker Dwight Howard attempted a slam-dunk, it turned into a "slime" dunk!
Neil Patrick Harris and Sandra Bullock did some "magic" onstage as they presented the Favorite Movie Actress award to Kristen Stewart. Harris claimed he could conjure up a "slime-free zone" to protect them. His attempt failed miserably and ended with slime shooting out of the podium and drenching them both.
There were many other big winners at the KCAs, which were hosted by actor Josh Duhamel. Nickelodeon's Victorious took home Favorite TV Show for the second year in a row and Johnny Depp won Favorite Movie Actor. Katy Perry received the blimp for Favorite Female Singer, while Wreck-It-Ralph was awarded Favorite Animated Movie.
