TIME For Kids visits the set of a ghostly new comedy on Nickelodeon
Beware! Ghosts are coming to Nickelodeon. A new paranormal series, The Haunted Hathaways, has some ghoulishly fun surprises up its sleeve!
"It's an amazing comedy about a blended family," Ginifer King told TFK. She plays Michelle Hathaway, a single mother of two daughters. "Viewers will love the supernatural effects. Think Beetlejuice meets The Brady Bunch."
What’s the Story?
The Haunted Hathaways follows the lives of Michelle Hathaway and her daughters. They move to New Orleans, Louisiana, to open a bakery. But life in New Orleans soon turns strange. The Hathaways discover that their new home is already occupied by a musician father and his two sons. What’s even weirder is these new roommates are ghosts!
Taylor, the oldest Hathaway sister (played by Amber Montana), is not pleased about her family's move. She’s upset that she had to leave behind her friends, her school and her gymnastics team. She’s not thrilled about the ghosts living in the attic either. The Haunted Hathaways follows the lives of Michelle Hathaway and her daughters. They move to New Orleans, Louisiana, to open a bakery. "Taylor definitely wants to fit in,” says Amber. “But now she has to keep family secrets. I mean, it's kind of weird living with ghosts.”
Eventually, Taylor befriends the cheery ghost Miles (played by Curtis Harris). Miles is a naturally happy specter who wants nothing to do with traditional ghostly activities.
"Miles hates the word scaring," says Curtis. "He's just so happy and he welcomes people. In fact, he's against scaring at all costs."
Not only does The Haunted Hathaways have great characters, there are awesome special effects, too. Each scene has its own funny moments that usually involve ghosting-gone-wrong.
The ghost family’s dad (played by Chico Benymon) has a good bit of fun during each episode. "We turn into animals, I split in half, I jump into people's bodies and lay eggs,” says Benymon. “We do what a lot of people aren't doing on television right now. I think kids are going to like seeing something different."
The physical comedy is extreme. Ghosts inhabit characters' bodies. There are squirting pies and mustard cakes. It’s a show that will make viewers laugh out loud.
"The special effects are unbelievable," says King (who plays the girls’ mother). "The [production team] does an amazing job with the ghosts going in and out of walls and turning into different animals."
Be sure to tune in to this supernatural show on Saturday, July 13 on Nickelodeon. You’ll have a ghostly good time!
