Mario Kart 8 for Nintendo Wii U

Ready, set, go—it’s Mario time! The Mario Kart series has been entertaining families with its simple concept (players race each other as Nintendo characters on go-cart–style tracks) since the first game launched on Super Nintendo in 1992. This latest version is the first for the Wii U console and features some fun surprises. The new tracks, in which players hover sideways or upside down during crazy twists and turns, are a highlight. Up to four players can race locally and up to 12 can race online. Mario Kart TV even lets you capture highlights from the race to share with friends. ($59.99, Rated E for everyone) —Kelli Plasket
