Mess

By Benjamin Ecsedy, 10

Grand-Prize Winner

A little yo-yo,

clump of dirt,

piece of paper,

tattered shirt,

A gummy worm,

soiled socks,

a month-old

greasy pizza box,

Half a stick

of bubble gum,

something that

looks like green scum,

Arcade tickets,

broken Slinky,

Ew . . . I smell

something stinky!

A broken crayon,

lots of dust,

a couple nails

with gray-brown rust,

A plastic Baggie,

moldy bread:

All this stuff is

underneath my bed.

More than 2,100 kids entered this year’s TIME For Kids Poetry Contest. The Poetry Foundation’s children’s poet laureate, Kenn Nesbitt, chose the winners. Click through this slide show for more winning rhymes.
