Christmas is celebrated on December 25. People celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on Christmas. They may decorate with nativity scenes like this.

Green trees are used to decorate homes during the Christmas season. A long time ago in Germany, people cut down trees and brought them to their homes for decorating. Today, people decorate trees with colored ornaments and bright lights.

This jolly man is known as Santa Claus. In the U.S., children are given gifts on Christmas. In other countries, gifts are given on New Year’s Day.

Stockings hanging near a fireplace are a common sight during the holidays. Stockings can be used as decoration or they can be filled with candy, fruit, small toys and other items. Legend says that if Santa Claus puts coal in a stocking, it means the person has been naughty.

Many songs have been written about Christmas. In many parts of the world, carolers go from house to house to sing Christmas songs and wish people a happy holiday.  Groups of carolers may also include people who play instruments. It is common for people to give carolers money or treats to thank them for singing.
