Jack-o’-lanterns are a traditional symbol of Halloween. But some pumpkin carvings are anything but ordinary. Here, at the Pumpkin Fest in Chicago, Illinois, about 40,000 carved pumpkins are lit. Festival participants hope to set a Guinness World Record for the most people carving pumpkins at one time. Key Largo, Florida, does Halloween a bit differently. Each year, the island community holds an underwater pumpkin-carving contest. Divers fully equipped with oxygen tanks dive deep underwater to carve the orange gourds.

A glowing turtle emerges from a pumpkin in this unusual jack-o’-lantern carving. When the pumpkin is lit, it creates the image of a turtle peeking out from its shell.

Star Gourds
This carving brings Star Wars down to Earth in a rendering of the hairy character, Chewbacca. Its eyes and mouth glow from the inside when the jack-o’-lantern is illuminated. It takes the artist nearly two hours to complete this sort of carving.
