Beyond the Bubble

Number 2 pencils and bubble sheets may soon be relics of the past. Beginning in 2014, schools across the country will give standardized tests only on computers and tablets. The new tests, or assessments, will require computer skills, such as typing, and cutting and pasting.
The tests are designed to reflect the Common Core State Standards, which guide instruction in 48 states. “These tests are difficult,” says Nancy Larsson, principal of Woodside Elementary, in Hartford, Michigan. “Students need to know how to think and not just to repeat facts.”
