Planetary High Five

On August 16, TIME for Kids teamed up with Slooh to bring young astronomers an evening of planet hunting!

This video shows five of the brightest planets as they gathered together in the night sky. Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn were all visible at the exact same time.

While some considered this an “alignment” of the planets, the planets didn't actually line up. In fact, they actually appeared in two groups. Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter were visible for those with sharp eyes and a clear Western horizon. Mars and Saturn, meanwhile, were the stars of our show, as they rose high in the Southern skies, forming a triangle with the bright star Antares. You can see these planets clearly in the Constellation Cam, thanks to their distinct colors.
