Barack Obama began his second term as President of the United States in January 2013. In his Inaugural address on January 21 he listed many goals for his second term. Among them were improving health care and reducing its costs for all Americans, protecting the environment, working towards world peace, and making America more welcoming to immigrants.

Over the past year, the President has faced much criticism and opposition. But he has pushed ahead to address many of these goals. The economy continues to improve under his leadership. “Our businesses have created 7.8 million new jobs in the past 44 months,” the President noted in his in his weekly radio address on November 23.

The President’s health care plan, the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare) has received criticism. There were technical problems when the plan’s website launched on October 1, and concern about the plan itself as other details became known. The law aims to get insurance to the more than 48 million Americans without health insurance by next year.

In June, the President proposed a plan to require power plants to reduce emissions that are harmful to the environment.

In his efforts to promote peace, the President helped work out a “first step” agreement to slow Iran from creating dangerous nuclear weapons. Iran, the U.S. and five other nations reached the historic agreement on November 24. The President is also leading efforts to bring peace to other Middle Eastern nations.  To address immigration, the President has created a plan that, if passed would make it possible for many of the 11 million illegal immigrants now living in this country to become U.S. citizens.

For his work towards bettering America’s economy and health care, protecting the environment and immigrants, and promoting world peace, President Barack Obama is a nominee for TFK's 2013 Person of the Year.
