Common Core Teaching Tips for "Good Enough to Eat":

Support close reading by following these steps.

Read for understanding

Read the article together, stopping to discuss important facts and details along the way. Ask: What is entomophagy? What are some possible reasons why Arnold van Huis thinks we need alternatives to meat?

Find Evidence in the Text

Write the following focus question on the board: What is the most convincing reason to eat insects? Have students first reread the cover story with a partner, focusing on the reasons people already eat bugs and the explanations scientists give for why more people should eat insects. Ask: What role do facts and statistics have in this article?

Synthesize Findings

Ask students to rank the reasons for eating insects, from most to least convincing, taking into consideration which reasons benefit individuals and which benefit society. Point out that the author does not include her opinion on this topic. Ask: What do you think is the reason for that?

Writing Task

Tell students to imagine that it is their job to prepare a report on entomophagy for U.S. lawmakers. Using information from the article, challenge them to create a briefing on the topic. Have them include sections for different topics, such as Background, Important Facts, and Examples.

R.1: Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.

R.2 Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas.

R.8: Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, including the validity of the reasoning as well as the relevance and sufficiency of the evidence.

W.2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content.
