Star Power: Eli Mathews

Meet Service Star Eli Mathews, 11, who started a community service youth group in Scottsdale, Arizona. TFK Kid Reporter Asha Curley spoke with Eli about his efforts.
What inspired you to start Tiny GIANTS?
I’m lucky I don’t have to worry about life’s basic necessities, but I know others are not as fortunate. Tiny GIANTS aims to give back to the community.
What is the main purpose of your organization?
Tiny GIANTS focuses on getting young people involved in community services. It specifically helps those in Arizona who live below the poverty line.
What are your biggest accomplishments with the organization?
During the pandemic, we put on more charitable events than ever before. The most rewarding moment was when we held a drive-up Thanksgiving food giveaway. We set up a station with holiday food. Families in need drove up, and we loaded groceries into their trunks. We were able to see and interact with the families we were helping.
What has been the most challenging aspect of your work?
I’m only 11 years old, so it can be difficult for me to organize events. I need to rely on my parents for the planning phase.
What advice would you give to other kids interested in giving back to their communities?
Just go for it! It’s hard work, but the sense of accomplishment and giving back makes it all worth it.
