Star Power: Logan Goodman
Meet Service Star Logan Goodman, 14, who cofounded an organization called Helping Hearts Houston. The group connects middle school girls with community service opportunities in Houston, Texas, where Logan lives. TFK reader Riya Kejriwal spoke with Logan about her work.
What inspired you to form Helping Hearts Houston?
During sixth grade, I applied to join a service organization called the National Charity League. But some friends and I didn’t get in, because there were limited slots. I still wanted to volunteer. I got the idea to start Helping Hearts with my friend, Mary, and our moms. My mother also grew up doing community service. She introduced me to volunteering.
What’s the goal of Helping Hearts?
We want girls to have accessible volunteer experiences. Middle schoolers often have other commitments that don’t allow them to be part of activities like this. With Helping Hearts, they get to give back and hang out with their friends. I want girls to enjoy volunteering!
What are some of your favorite moments with the group?
We participated in a grocery store event with free food donated by local markets. People could shop for free. We restocked the tables and explained each product. People were grateful for something so simple. It was eye-opening.
I also think spending time with people is overlooked when compared to other kinds of service, like donating food or clothes. When I talked to and played bingo with residents at MorningStar Senior Living, they were always excited to see me.
What’s your proudest achievement with Helping Hearts?
There are almost 300 girls participating now. We’re branching out and helping every part of Houston that we can. I’m amazed to see how far it’s come.
How have you grown since starting the group?
I definitely feel a larger sense of community. I see more sides of the world and Houston. It makes me more grateful for what I have.
What would you like to say to other kids who want to volunteer?
Never be hesitant to reach out and help someone. Even if it’s for one afternoon, the little things matter. They can make a lasting impact on someone’s life.
