Star Power: Queenie Howard
Meet Service Star Queenie Howard, 8. Queenie volunteers with Food on the Stove, an organization based in the Washington, D.C., area. The group prepares healthy food for first responders, such as firefighters. TFK Kid Reporter Asha Curley spoke with Queenie about her efforts.
Tell us about your work with Food on the Stove.
We make food and learn about what firefighters do for us and why we should give back to them.
What’s the most rewarding part of your volunteer work?
My favorite part about my project is the way I give back. I try to get more people to start [volunteering]. I see other people doing it with me—helping. It makes me feel really grateful.
What’s the most challenging part of your work?
I think the most challenging part is when I speak about my work in front of other people, because I get a little bit nervous. But I just try to calm myself down, because I know these are my friends and my family. I know I can talk to them about what I’m doing.
What advice would you give to other kids interested in helping others?
It doesn’t matter if you’re little. You can be really young and do amazing stuff. I just want other kids to know that, even if you’re really little, you’re not just one small thing. You can change your whole entire world.
