America’s birthday, smash-hit soccer, record heat waves. This summer was packed with big events.
In the United States, crowds gathered on July 4 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence. Celebrations included festivals, drone shows, and fireworks.

Attendees did their best to keep cool. July was the hottest month on record for the U.S., according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Excluding Alaska and Hawaii, the nation averaged 76.89°F.
People struggled with extreme heat outside the U.S., too. Several European countries, including Austria and Slovakia, saw record temperatures. The heat disrupted school, work, and travel for many.
Amid that heat, the world’s top soccer players battled during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The tournament began June 11. On July 19, Spain defeated Argentina in the final match at MetLife Stadium, in East Rutherford, New Jersey. After the match, Argentina star Lionel Messi called the World Cup a “beautiful journey.”
