His Style

J AND M PHOTOGRAPHY AND DESIGN

More than 25 years ago, Darrius Peace was in college. He had a problem, because no one at school could braid his hair. He decided to learn how to do it himself.

This was in the 1990s. YouTube wasn’t around then. “There was no online resource that could help me learn how to do it,” Peace told TFK. So he took matters into his own hands. He practiced. It took “months of trial-and-error sessions,” he says. “Eventually, I got it.”

Soon, other students were asking Peace to do their hair. Now he owns a salon.

Darrius Peace is the owner of Hayah Beauty. It’s a salon in Birmingham, Alabama.

His Own Way

In college, Peace found a barber school near his dorm. He signed up. There, he learned various techniques. He learned to cut hair. He learned to color and treat it.

Peace is known for working with all hair types and textures. He didn’t learn this in school, he says. He learned as he went.

Peace makes sure his clients go home feeling proud of their hair. He does everything he can to “help that person have a good feeling and good thoughts about themself,” he says.

Ready on Set

Peace also styles hair on film sets. Characters can be from the past or the future. So he has to be creative. “Maybe they have to look like they were born in 1791,” Peace says. “Or like they were born in 2091.”

Another challenge is being consistent. “You may be working [with] that same exact hairstyle for six months,” Peace says. He has to make sure the character’s hair looks the same every time.

Just like in college, Peace rises to any occasion. And he does it with style.
