A debate is a discussion. Participants share their opinions. They listen to the other point of view. This helps people understand others. Here is how to prepare for a debate.
1. Choose your side.
What is your opinion? Think about the debate question. Are you in favor? Or are you opposed? That means you are against it.
2. Support your side.
What are the reasons for your opinion? Would they persuade others? Use more than your feelings. Do research to find facts. Facts will support your opinion.
3. Think about the other side.
What might someone with a different opinion say? How could you respond to them? Make sure to be respectful.
4. Put it all together.
Write your ideas in a paragraph. Include explanations for each reason. Or partner up. Talk about your ideas. Listen to what your partner has to say. Did anyone’s mind change?
