A tiny new cat has been identified. It is called a tilcayo. Scientists introduced the species in a study on September 17. The discovery is exciting. It is the first new wild cat species found in more than 100 years. The study involved a cat named Tigrino. He lives at Senda Verde Wildlife Sanctuary, in Bolivia. People assumed he was part the oncilla species. But he is smaller. His spots are different. So scientists studied his DNA. They realized Tigrino is a new kind of cat.

Marcelo Levy is a cofounder of Senda Verde. He hopes the finding will raise awareness for wild cats. “He’s such a tiny animal,” Levy said of Tigrino. “And he has become something so important.”
