Mount Merapi is a volcano in Indonesia. That’s in southeast Asia. On March 11, Merapi erupted. Lava flowed down its slopes. The volcano let out clouds of gas and hot ash. The ash blocked out the sun and blanketed villages.

Hanik Humaida is the head of a volcanology center in Indonesia. She gave a warning to people who live near Merapi. She told them to stay at least four miles from the mouth of the volcano. Tourists were told to stay away, too.

Indonesia has more than 120 active volcanoes. Mount Merapi is the most active. Its last big eruption was in 2010.
