Word of the Year

STEPHEN BLUE FOR TIME FOR KIDS

Late in 2023, Merriam-Webster announced its word of the year. It picked the word authentic. Merriam-Webster publishes dictionaries. It highlights a word every year. The choice is based on searches from the dictionary’s website. Often, the word reflects world events.

Authentic is defined as “real” or “actual.” This year has seen the rise of artificial intelligence. AI creates inauthentic text and images. “We don’t always trust what we see anymore,” Peter Sokolowski says. He’s an editor at Merriam-Webster.

The word also means “true to one’s personality.” Celebrities and global leaders have said they strive to be authentic. Other top words of 2023 were deepfake and rizz.
