Braving the Storm

A book cover shows two girls running through a snowy forest, next to a portrait of a smiling woman wearing a white headscarf. A kid reporter badge appears in the upper corner.

Sisters Alone, which was published in September, is a tale of bravery and sisterhood. The book is about “two sisters who have had a crack in their relationship ever since their mother died,” author SHIFA SALTAGI SAFADI told TIME for Kids. “When they get stuck home alone in a blizzard, they have to figure out what that crack is, and heal it. They lean on each other in order to survive the storm.”

The book is written in verse, as poetry. It has rhythm. Safadi enjoys writing in verse because of the “many beautiful things” it can do: “I love the way that verse tells a complete story with so [few] words,” she says. “I think about every single word on the page and how it makes the reader feel, how it sounds musically, how it looks on the page visually.”
