Growing Pains
The SpongeBob Movie: Search For SquarePants is the newest film from the 26-year-old franchise. It finds SpongeBob struggling to confront his fears as he grows up. He wants to be seen by his friends as a brave “big guy.” SpongeBob’s quest leads him to the Flying Dutchman, a ghostly pirate with bad intentions.
Director Derek Drymon thinks the audience will understand what SpongeBob is feeling. “You get to a certain age and can now do the thing you wanted to do—but you’re scared to do it,” he told TFK. He hopes that viewers realize fear is totally normal. “It’s okay to be afraid,” he says. “It’s nothing to be ashamed of.”
The SpongeBob Movie: Search For SquarePants arrives in theaters on December 19.
