On September 16, scientists announced the discovery of a new moon crater. “This event constitutes a statistically rare, effectively once-in-a-lifetime observation,” the study authors wrote in the journal Science Advances. The crater is extremely large: It measures more than 700 feet wide and nearly 150 feet deep. Scientists estimate that the crater was made in spring 2024, when a meteorite must have crashed into the lunar surface.
