Four bunnies, one neighborhood park, and a race against time: The Wild Season is DASHKA SLATER’S middle-grade nonfiction debut. It tells the true story of four pet rabbits dumped in Golden Gate Heights Park, in San Francisco, California. When the bunnies are left to fend for themselves, the neighborhood bands together to catch them and find safe, loving homes for them.
Kids play an important role in the story. There’s Allison, a teenage animal lover, and Sam, an adventurous kid who joins the cause. Slater urges young readers to step up and take action in their community. “There are problems that you can fix,” she told TIME for Kids. “All of us have things that we can do.”
Readers of any age will love The Wild Season, especially young ones hoping to make a difference.
