Separated Siblings

COLBERT: JAMAAL

TFK Kid Reporter Aubrey Lamirault read Let’s Get Together and interviewed its author, Brandy Colbert. Read Aubrey’s thoughts below.

Line Break

Let’s Get Together is about two girls, Liberty and Kenya, who discover they’re long lost twins, separated at birth. Kenya is living a stable life with their biological father, while Liberty has grown up in foster care. The novel explores what makes us the people we truly are and also how families shape us.

Alternating between Liberty’s and Kenya’s perspectives, readers understand the girls’ feelings and unique personalities. The two struggle with being seen as individuals while learning how to connect as sisters. There’s tension and rivalry as they work to understand each other.

What I love most about the book are its themes of family, identity, and self-discovery. Colbert captures the challenges of foster care and the many forms families can take. As she tells TIME for Kids, “There is no one way to be a family.” This message feels powerful and true. Both Liberty and Kenya learn that belonging doesn’t mean losing individuality. “Belonging doesn’t always look how you think it will,” Colbert says. “[The] desire to be accepted by a certain group of people might shift over time.”

Let’s Get Together is a powerful story about learning to accept yourself for who you are. I recommend this book to anyone on a journey of self-discovery.
