Animals can be majestic, but they can also be downright silly. The annual Nikon Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards celebrate nature’s goofiest moments, using the power of humor to promote conservation. This year’s winners were announced at a ceremony in London, England, on December 9.

The competition is open to photographers of all ages and experience levels. Judges considered nearly 10,000 entries from 108 countries. The top prize went to Mark Meth-Cone. During a trek in Rwanda, he snapped a photo of a young gorilla. (Above) He caught the gorilla “tumbling and high-kicking” with other youngsters, Meth-Cone said in a statement. He called the sight “pure joy.”

Other photographers, including 13-year-old Grayson Bell, took home prizes. Bell submitted a photo of two fighting frogs. Grayson’s photo won the Junior category for under 16s.

The competition was founded by wildlife photographers in 2015. On the contest website, the founders explain their goal. “We want our viewers to share our enjoyment of nature and take the time to recognize its value,” they write, adding that these silly animal photos show “how alike we really are.”
