Wicked: For Good, the sequel to the first Wicked movie, arrived in theaters on November 21. The movies, set long before The Wizard of Oz, tell the origin story of the Wicked Witch of the West.

Stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande return as Elphaba and Glinda, two young witches. Oscar-winning hair, makeup, and prosthetics designer Frances Hannon is back, too. Hannon worked with director Jon Chu on everything from Elphaba’s green skin to Prince Fiyero’s blue horses. (Yep, even the horses wore makeup.)

Hannon led a team of hair, makeup, and prosthetic artists, working her magic to develop the look of the characters. “The characters change visually” from one movie to the next, she told TIME for Kids. “Their hair and makeup tell the story.”

In addition to being visually stunning, Wicked: For Good is full of music. Hannon recalls the actors’ singing during production. “Every song is so emotional and touching,” she says.
