If you like exploring the Your Hot Job website, you might enjoy reading the book! TIME for Kids: Your Hot Job Field Guide is packed with guidance, inspiration, and more, to help kids discover fulfilling career paths. Learn five key vocab words, straight from the pages:

  • A career is the path a person takes through work. It’s not just one job: It’s a journey made up of all the jobs, skills, and professional experiences you collect as you go along.

  • An industry is a group of related jobs. People in the same industry often work toward a common goal, such as improving health, solving environmental issues, or designing useful technology. There are many different industries, and each one includes a wide mix of roles.

  • A mentor is someone who shares their knowledge and experience to help guide you toward a goal. They might give advice, answer questions, or just listen when you need to talk something through. Mentors can be teachers, coaches, family members, neighbors—anyone who helps you learn and grow.

  • A freelancer is a worker who can sell their services to a number of companies or groups at once. Freelancers work in every industry and offer a variety of skills, from web design and coding to makeup artistry and accounting. What makes freelancers different is that they are self-employed: They take on projects with individual clients rather than making a long-term commitment to one employer.

  • Prioritizing means figuring out what’s most important to get done and doing that first. It requires an understanding of how much time needs to be spent on certain things, and knowing the difference between needs versus wants. Students learn to prioritize as they balance family, friends, school, and hobbies.
