Americans Vote in Midterms
On November 3, Americans voted in the midterm elections. These decide which party will control the House of Representatives and the Senate. They’re now controlled by Republicans. On election night, Democrats won a majority in both. Elected lawmakers will begin their terms on January 3. President Donald Trump, a Republican, will then have a Congress led by the opposing party.
At press time, some ballots are still being counted. But candidates have already broken barriers. One is Georgia’s Keisha Lance Bottoms. She will be the first Black female governor of a state. Another is Michigan’s Abdul El-Sayed. He will be the first Muslim U.S. senator. “I’m not running to be the first Muslim anything,” El-Sayed told CNN in August. “I just want to be a really, really great senator for my state.”
