Cicadas to Return

Billions of noisy cicadas will emerge this spring in some Eastern states. These include Tennessee, Kentucky, and New York. When cicadas are young, they live underground. Once they’re fully grown, they climb out of the ground in a big, buzzing group. The group is known as a brood. This year’s brood is called Brood XIV. This brood emerges every 17 years.

Cicadas might be loud. But they’re not dangerous. They don’t bite or sting. They provide food for birds. They also promote healthy soil.
