Forget Me Not
In the new movie Forgotten Island, Jo and Reissa are best friends trapped on a mystical island called Nakali. The island was inspired by the folklore of the Philippines. It feeds on memories. The friends must escape before they forget their friendship.
JOEL CRAWFORD (left) and JANUEL MERCADO directed the movie. They’re close friends. They’ve worked on several movies together. They spoke with TIME for Kids about how Forgotten Island celebrates Filipino culture.
The movie features Tagalog, a language spoken in the Philippines. Mercado is Filipino American. He says the language adds “another layer of storytelling.” The film is also about friendship. “We wanted to make a movie that celebrates being there for your friends in the moment,” Crawford says. Forgotten Island hits theaters September 25.
