Star Power: Foster Barinholtz

Meet Service Star Foster Barinholtz, 12, who started a chapter of a community-service club in her hometown of Los Angeles, California. TFK Kid Reporter Aubrey Lamirault spoke with Foster about her efforts.
What motivated you to start a chapter of Hang Out Do Good (HODG)?
HODG supports those facing financial hardship and lacking basic necessities. I brought it to my school to raise awareness and engage my peers in addressing these overlooked issues.
What messages did you convey at your school to encourage students to join?
I explained how small acts have a big impact. Just a few minutes can brighten someone’s day.
Did you face any obstacles in bringing HODG to your school?
Convincing staff was tough. Many doubted interest. But 13 students joined last year to make a difference. I’m hopeful even more will participate this school year.
What kind of impact has your HODG chapter made locally?
We participated in making more than 100 sandwiches for the Hollywood Food Coalition. It felt amazing seeing the recipients’ gratitude.
What would you say to kids who want to make a difference but aren't sure where to start?
Do what you think is right. Address problems no one’s looking at. Just be a true helper in your community. Look for solutions, and execute them.
