Star Power: Joshua Conger
Meet Service Star Joshua Conger, 14. He started Joshua’s Joyful Giving, an organization that donates toys to kids receiving treatment at the Children’s Hospital of Orange County, in California. TFK reader Vera So spoke with Joshua about his efforts.
What exactly do you do to help other kids?
I give toys to kids in the hospital. It brings them a smile while they are sick or having surgery.
What inspired you to create Joshua’s Joyful Giving?
When I was 9 years old, I was going to the doctor every week. Each week, the doctor would give me a small toy to help me not be sad. One day, the toy cupboard was empty. On the way home, I asked my mom to ask her friends for toys to donate.
What kinds of things do you collect for the kids, and where do they come from?
I collect toys, games, and books by asking for donations on our website. People also donate money to us. I love going shopping and picking out toys.
Who else is a part of Joshua’s Joyful Giving? How do you work together?
My mom, grandma, grandpa, and friends. They all have their own specialties. Mom and Grandma help with shopping. Grandpa counts and fills the toy boxes.
What’s your favorite memory with Joshua’s Joyful Giving?
My favorite memories are from each December, when I deliver thousands of toys and see everybody’s smile.
How can other families get involved in what you're doing?
They can have their kids go shopping. They can also donate money to help us buy toys, fill backpacks, or count and organize the toys. We deliver to nine clinics and the hospital. We have lots of toys to count!
