Animals can be majestic. But they can also be silly. The annual Nikon Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards celebrate these silly moments. This year’s winners were announced at a ceremony in London, England, on December 9.
The contest is open to anyone. Judges considered nearly 10,000 entries from 108 countries. The top prize went to Mark Meth-Cone. He snapped a photo of a young gorilla in Rwanda. (Above) He caught the gorilla “tumbling and high-kicking,” Meth-Cone said in a statement. He called the sight “pure joy.”
Other photographers won prizes. Grayson Bell, 13, submitted a photo of two fighting frogs. It won the Junior category for under 16s.

The competition was founded by wildlife photographers in 2015. On the contest website, they explain their goal. “We want our viewers to share our enjoyment of nature and take the time to recognize its value,” they write, adding that these silly animal photos show “how alike we really are.”
