The public school district of Seattle, Washington, is suing social-media companies. These include Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, and YouTube. A mental health crisis is affecting kids. Social media is a major cause, the district says.

The lawsuit was filed on January 6. It says social-media platforms “promote harmful content to youth.” The sites hook users to keep them scrolling, the suit claims.

The companies claim they try to protect kids. For instance, YouTube lets parents limit screen time. It also lets them block content. Snapchat helps connect users to mental health experts.

The district wants the companies to help pay for education and treatment.
