Wildlife Update
The green sea turtle is making a recovery. That’s according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In October, it released its yearly report. This is the Red List of Threatened Species.
The report says green sea turtle numbers have increased 28% since the 1970s. The IUCN has shifted the species’ status to “least concern.”
Roderic Mast helps lead the IUCN group that studies sea turtles. He called the news a “powerful example” of what conservation efforts can do. Among these efforts are the protection of sea turtles and their nests on beaches.
There’s worrying news, too. The IUCN report says more than half the world’s bird species are in decline. Also, Arctic seals are suffering severe habitat loss.
But the green sea turtle’s comeback offers reason to hope. Grethel Aguilar is the IUCN director. She says the report “shines a light on both the urgent challenges and the powerful possibilities before us.”
Stop and Think!
WHY do you think the story’s headline is “Wildlife Report”? What is the purpose of a headline? What could be another headline?
