What do Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson, Naomi Osaka, and Bruno Mars have in common? They’re Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who have brightened our world. They’re included in We Are Here. It’s an anthology of 30 biographies by Naomi Hirahara. Lesser-known people are also profiled. “We wanted readers to learn more about people who are really important in their communities for who they are as leaders and what they stand for, but who don’t always get the big media spotlight,” Andrea Kim Neighbors told TFK. She’s with the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, which initiated the project. “There might be times when we feel our particular culture is minimized,” Hirahara adds. “I want young people to feel that the community that created them is important.”
