Buses Go Electric

Most buses rely on diesel fuel. This fuel pollutes the air. Some cities are turning to electric buses instead.

Madison, Wisconsin, is one city that’s making the change. It introduced a fleet of electric buses in 2024. More than a third of Madison’s buses are now electric. This will save the city “roughly a quarter-million gallons of diesel fuel per year.” That’s according to the city’s website. But there’s an issue: Madison winters are very cold. Cold can drain batteries. Madison was able to keep the buses running this winter. According to the Grist website, the city improved the buses’ batteries. It also installed speedy overhead chargers.
