The Women’s Pro Baseball League is new. But women have been part of the game for centuries. They have changed the sport. This timeline highlights some important moments in women in baseball.
1866
Vassar becomes the first college to organize a women’s baseball team (above). Players wear long skirts.
1943
Many male ballplayers leave to fight in World War II. Chicago Cubs owner Philip K. Wrigley starts the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. He hopes to keep baseball alive during the war.
1953
Toni Stone signs with the Indianapolis Clowns. She is the first woman to play professional baseball regularly in a men’s major baseball league.
2023
Olivia Pichardo is the first woman to play Division I college baseball. She plays for Brown University.
2026
The Women’s Pro Baseball League (WPBL) is launched.
