Queens of the League
On September 22, the Los Angeles Queens won the final game of the 2026 Women’s Professional Baseball League (WPBL) Championship. This makes them the first champions of the league, which debuted in August.
The WPBL Championship was an exciting race between the Los Angeles Queens and the San Francisco Firebells. The best-of-five series was played at Robin Roberts Stadium, in Springfield, Illinois. The Queens came out strong, winning the first two games. But the Firebells fought back, winning the next two. It was all down to the final game.
The Queens won in a 2–0 shutout. Their pitcher, Ayami Sato, played the entire game. She allowed no runs and only five hits. Sato was honored with the Most Valuable Player award. “I wanted to enjoy my baseball with the best teammates in the world,” Sato told the crowd through a translator. “My mind and my pitching connected successfully, and we won.”
