Meet Service Star Oceane Qian-Feuillat, 16. As Miss New Jersey Teen USA, Oceane started a program called Girls Leading Our World (GLOW). The program helps girls build confidence, practice public speaking, and take on leadership roles. TFK reader Sonali Vadada spoke with Oceane about her efforts.

What first inspired you to start GLOW?

Growing up mixed-heritage, I struggled to find my own voice. I wanted to create a supportive space where young girls could discover their unique strengths, embrace their differences, and feel proud of who they were.

How does GLOW help girls overcome the fear of public speaking?

We make it fun and encouraging! We do interactive activities where girls can practice speaking and sharing their ideas. I always tell them that having confidence doesn’t mean you never get nervous—it just means you give it a try anyway.

How do you juggle service work, school, and other commitments?

I stick to a solid schedule, prioritize what’s most important, and make sure to save time for myself. Most importantly, I remind myself that perfection isn’t necessary. You just have to do your best.

Can you share a moment when you realized your work was making a difference?

I hosted a confidence workshop at Girls Inc., a nonprofit, and one participant was really shy. She ended up building so much confidence that she modeled in a fashion show later on. That event raised more than $3,500 for Girls Inc., which was incredible to see.

Why is it so important for kids to be involved in the community?

We are the generation inheriting the future. We don’t have to wait until we grow up to make a difference. Kids can make a real impact right now, whether that’s starting a recycling club or running a neighborhood fundraiser.
