Star Power: Shrihan Sivaraman

Meet Service Star Shrihan Sivaraman, 17. Shrihan started an organization to raise funds for first responders, such as paramedics. The organization is called My Sanskruti. “Sanskruti” is Sanskrit for “Culture." TFK Kid Reporter Madeline Martinez spoke with Shrihan about his efforts.

What inspired you to start My Sanskruti?

One time, there was a fire in my house. The Berwyn, Pennsylvania, fire department rushed over to the scene and evacuated us, which was very selfless. I wanted to show my gratitude, so my mom and I brainstormed and landed on a Diwali fundraiser. That’s how My Sanksruti initiated.

Have you faced any challenges while starting your nonprofit?

When I was in middle school, I was told that no one would come to my event because it was hosted by a middle schooler. But I put all of my effort into the fundraiser.

Do you have any tips for kids who would like to start a nonprofit like yours?

When you help others, do it selflessly without expecting anything in return. When obstacles come your way, do not give up—persevere through them. We kids have some of the greatest ideas because we look at the world through fresh eyes and open hearts. So never, ever hesitate to reach out to an adult and share your thoughts to help make this world a better place in your small way.

What is your favorite part of community service?

I think when you do good, you feel good. That's often my favorite part about doing these kinds of things—the satisfaction that comes out of doing these events.

What are your fundraising goals for the next few years?

I plan to host many more fundraisers. For example, I'm currently hosting a plant sale fundraiser. I intend to keep running this nonprofit moving forward. I've poured my heart and soul into it, and after putting in the hard work to get it to this successful stage, I'm excited to see it continue to grow.
