Spain’s World Cup Win

Spain has won the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Spain defeated Argentina, the 2022 victor, in the tournament’s final match. The final took place on July 19 at MetLife Stadium, in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Eighty thousand spectators from around the globe packed the stadium to watch the match. It was a long one. After 90 minutes of regular play, neither team had scored a goal after 90 minutes of regulation play. The match went into 30 minutes of extra time. In the 16th minute of extra time, Spanish player Ferran Torres, 26, made the game’s only goal. It meant victory for Spain. “It was a goal scored by 47 million people,” Torres told reporters after the match, referring to Spain’s population.

The two-hour game included a star-studded halftime show. It featured musicians including Madonna, Justin Bieber, BTS, and several Muppets. The show also featured a chorus of elementary school students from Staten Island, New York.

A Month of Matches

Both teams have fought hard since the 48-team tournament kicked off on June 11. Fans have shown their support for the sport’s stars, such as Lionel Messi, 39, who plays for Argentina. Messi made eight goals in the 2026 World Cup. In a press conference following Argentina’s loss, he called the tournament a “beautiful journey.”

Spain’s victory broke several records. The team allowed only one goal in eight matches in this World Cup run. That’s a record for the fewest goals allowed by a champion. Spain also became the first European nation to hold both the men’s and women’s soccer titles at the same time. Spain won the Women’s World Cup in 2023.

Also, Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, 65, is the oldest man to lead a team to a World Cup title. “Accompanying them on this journey is an honor,” he said in a press conference after the win.

The next men’s World Cup tournament will take place in 2030. The Women’s World Cup will be held next year, beginning in June.
