America’s birthday. Smash-hit soccer. Record heat. This summer was packed with big events.
In the United States, crowds gathered on July 4 to celebrate 250 years of American independence. Events included festivals and fireworks.

Attendees tried to keep cool. July was the hottest month ever for the U.S. That’s according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Apart from Alaska and Hawaii, the nation averaged 76.89°F.
People also struggled with heat outside the U.S. Several European countries saw record temperatures.
In the midst of that heat, soccer players battled during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. It began June 11. On July 19, Spain defeated Argentina in the final match at MetLife Stadium, in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Argentina star Lionel Messi called the World Cup a “beautiful journey.”
