Surprise Visitor
In March, a massive sea lion plopped onto a pier in San Francisco, California, delighting onlookers. Quickly nicknamed Chonkers, the Steller’s sea lion weighed about 2,000 pounds—more than twice the weight of the California sea lions usually seen in San Francisco Bay. Laura Gill is a manager at the Marine Mammal Center, in Sausalito, across the bay. She told the AP that Chonkers was probably searching for “easy prey,” such as anchovies. At press time, Chonkers had moved along.
