The Sun and Seasons

SHOO_ARTS/GETTY IMAGES

Earth has four seasons. They are spring, summer, fall, and winter. The Earth moves around the sun. One trip takes a year. Earth is tilted as it moves. This is what causes the seasons.

The equator is an imaginary line around Earth’s middle. Look at the image above. Do you live above the equator? In summer, the top half of Earth tilts toward the sun. It is warmer there. In winter, the top half tilts away from the sun. It is colder there.

It is the opposite for people who live below the equator. When it is summer above the equator, it is winter below.
